About

Born in 1985 in Comilla, Bangladesh

Visual artist

Born in Bangladesh, Xecon Uddin lives in France. He primarily uses printmaking techniques and also experiments with other media such as painting, drawing, ceramics, alternative photographic processes, and mixed media. Uddin primarily creates figurative works, often depicting hybrid humans combined with natural elements. His works reflect his exploration of dreams and memories, as well as the layered nature of identity, particularly related to his status as a refugee and queer artist. These themes are intertwined and reinforced by Uddin’s experience as an LGBTQI political refugee, combined with his reminiscences about Bangladesh and his cultural roots.

In his artistic practice, he explores several printmaking techniques, but primarily focuses on etching, aquatint, and stone lithography. In each of these works, a human figure occupies a strange natural landscape. His prints, such as the ‘Layers of Existence’ and ‘Invisible Dialogues’ series, contain an implicit message made visible through multiple transparent layers. The playful colors used, combined with surreal scenes of nostalgia and imaginative dreams, invite the viewer to reflect on their childhood, imaginative dreams, and past experiences.

His prints are strongly influenced by his fine arts study under the university of Dhaka in Bnagladesh. The vivid and striking colors, strong figurative drawings, and balanced composition make his works unique. The human body is often his primary subject when exploring identity and social conventions. Since moving to France, Uddin has reflected on these themes, focusing particularly on gender identity, while questioning the relationship between the human body and the notion of normality. By implementing sensory perceptions and spiritual reflections in his work, he aims to draw attention to social, political and cultural issues related to sexual identity.
